Gastroenterology Q & A

What is a gastroenterologist?

A gastroenterologist is a type of doctor who has extensive specialized experience and training in the treatment of conditions of the digestive system, including but not limited to:

  • Colitis
  • Colon polyps and cancer
  • Gallbladder and biliary tract disease
  • Heartburn
  • Hepatitis
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Nutritional problems
  • Pancreatitis
  • Peptic ulcer disease
  • Dyspepsia

Dr. Goldberg specializes in both internal medicine and gastroenterology, so he’s able to make important connections between your overall health and your digestive system symptoms. He approaches your condition holistically, factoring in your lifestyle, health history, and wellness goals to reduce symptoms and improve your comfort and function.

Do I need to see a gastroenterologist?

It depends on the symptoms you are experiencing. Trained in gastroenterology at the prestigious Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Dr. Goldberg treats patients with digestive concerns to improve their longevity and their quality of life.

You should contact Dr. Goldberg if you are experiencing:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Bloating
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Gas
  • Heartburn
  • Irregularity

For your convenience, most routine screenings and tests are done right in Dr. Goldberg’s New York office, including your colonoscopy or endoscopy.

What is a colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a painless medical procedure used to identify changes or abnormalities in the colon and rectum. Dr. Goldberg may recommend a colonoscopy to diagnose the cause of your pain and other symptoms, look for polyps, and screen for colon cancer.

During the procedure, Dr. Goldberg inserts a narrow, flexible tube into your rectum while you’re under mild sedation. At the tip of the tube is a tiny camera, allowing Dr. Goldberg to see inside your colon.  The test typically takes 20-40 minutes and you can expect to be out of the office within 3 hours.

Based on the results of your colonoscopy, Dr. Goldberg determines your treatment plan or possibly recommends additional testing.

What is an endoscopy?

Dr. Goldberg recommends endoscopy to examine, diagnose, and treat a wide variety of conditions and diseases including peptic ulcers, dyspepsia, GERD, gastritis, and certain cancers.  Like a colonoscopy, endoscopy is a painless procedure administered under sedation in the privacy of Dr. Goldberg’s office.

You will more than likely experience a GI issue at some point in your life. Trust a doctor with specialized gastroenterology training and experience to care for you.
